Schweizer Fintech-Start-up mit Tests in Tunesien

Internationale Startups aus der Innerschweiz wollen der digitalen Währung zum Durchbruch verhelfen. Ziel ist es, Personen ohne Bankzugang alltägliche mobile Bankgeschäfte zu ermöglichen. Monetas hat zum Beispiel seinen ersten Pilotversuch in Tunesien gestartet. Das Zuger Fintech-Start-up will günstige Überweisungen ermöglichen. Es nutzt dafür Kryptotechnologie und ähnliche Algorithmen wie Blockchain.

3D Printing - Bringing the World’s Greatest Art to Blind People

New York-based company 3Dphotoworks is aiming to make the 2D world of art accessible to blind people using a 3D printing process that turns paintings, drawings and photographs into 3D printed tactile fine art. Developed in collaboration with the National Federation of the Blind, the process of 3D tactile printing was inspired by the works on neuroplasticity by Dr. Paul Bach-y-Rita, a neuroscientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Toyota has big plans for artificial intelligence - and not just in cars

The automaker is earmarking $1 billion in funds for a new subsidiary called the Toyota Research Institute (TRI). The R&D firm will focus on building artificial intelligence products for automobiles and the home. It’s a big move for Toyota, one of several large automakers that are trying to navigate the tangled landscape ahead of the transition to autonomous and semiautonomous vehicles.

First Fully Digital Hospital in North America Opens In Canada

The first digital hospital in North America opened in Toronto, Canada on Sunday, Oct. 18. The Humber River Hospital offers advanced automated services, including robot servants and patient touchpads for maximum comfort customization. The hospital located at the northwestern part of the city has 656 beds and boasts fully digital features and the most advanced technology available.

Neuer Weltrekord: Chinesischer Roboter läuft 134 Kilometer

Seit Jahren wetteifern Wissenschaftler daher um den Titel des Langstreckenläufers unter den Maschinenmenschen. Der chinesische Roboter Xingzhe No. 1 stellte dabei vergangene Woche einen neuen Weltrekord auf: Mit nur einer einzigen Batterieladung legte er rund 134 Kilometer zurück.

Tragbares Minilabor ermöglicht einfache Bluttests auf Krebs

Jährlich sterben etwa acht Millionen Menschen an einer der zahlreichen Krebserkrankungen. Viele kommen aus Ländern wo die medizinische Infrastruktur oftmals nicht auf allerhöchstem Niveau ist. Darum haben Wissenschaftler ein Minilabor entwickelt, das in eine Handtasche passt, leicht zu transportieren, simpel zu bedienen und vergleichsweise kostengünstig ist. Es kann dann genutzt werden, um Blutproben auf Biomarker zu testen, die auf Krebs hindeuten können. Der ganze Prozess dauert dabei nur rund 15 Minuten.

World’s first portable lab-in-a-briefcase for diagnostic cancer testing

Academics at Loughborough University hope to boost early detection rates of cancer in developing countries with their portable lab-in-a-briefcase that can operate even at high temperatures. Believed to be the first kit of its kind dedicated to the portable measurement of cancer biomarkers, the concept is the brainchild of Dr Nuno Reis, a Lecturer in Chemical Engineering.
