Smarter Window Materials Can Control Light and Energy

AUSTIN, Texas — Researchers in the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin are one step closer to delivering smart windows with a new level of energy efficiency, engineering materials that allow windows to reveal light without transferring heat and, conversely, to block light while allowing heat transmission, as described in two new research papers.

By allowing indoor occupants to more precisely control the energy and sunlight passing through a window, the new materi…

What You Need to Know About the Internet of Things, and Why

If you’re not in the communication business now, you soon will be. The Internet of Things (IoT) will see to that. Tires used to be round rubber that rolled down the street while channeling water away and grabbing the road. Now they are data generators communicating with the car’s electronic brains.

My mother used to set a mechanical timer to ensure the oven came on to cook dinner while we were at school and work. Now cell phones are used to record shows, start the oven, turn the lights on and …

3 ways to turn waste grease into biodiesel

New techniques are letting researchers make biodiesel entirely from waste grease more cheaply and efficiently. Waste grease—a combination of used grease, vegetable oils, and animal fats—comes from homes and food and beverage outlets. It usually accumulates in grease traps of buildings’ sewer systems, and gets collected for disposal by contractors licensed by the National Environment Agency in Singapore.

"Rather than letting the waste grease get disposed of, it is much better to turn it into a …

New ways how to prevent counterfeit in currency, documents, credit cards, and even IDs

Miniaturization of optical structures makes it possible to control light at the nanoscale, but on the other hand it imposes a challenge of accurately handling numerous unit elements in a miniaturized device with aperiodic and random arrangements. Here, we report both the new analytical model and experimental demonstration of the photon sieves with ultrahigh-capacity of subwavelength holes (over 34 thousands) arranged in two different structural orders of randomness and aperiodicity. The random …

Boeing’s current market outlook 2015 - 2034

For the aviation industry, 2014 was an outstanding year—key metrics increased across the board, and we will continue to see this trend, with lower oil prices expected to save the industry tens of billions of dollars in 2015 alone.

Passenger traffic as measured by revenue passenger kilometers (RPK) was up nearly six percent in 2014, and capacity was up nearly 5.8 percent. The result was record load factors of almost 80 percent worldwide. Airlines continued using their airplanes more efficiently,…
