NARITA, Chiba Prefecture--NTT Communications Corp. has installed vending machines for prepaid SIM cards at Narita International Airport, offering an easy option for users to activate their mobile phones and other devices on Arrival.

Users simply scan their passports to register identification Information. The machines operate around the clock. One is in the arrival lobby of Terminal 1 and the other is in the arrival lobby of Terminal 2.

NTT Communications installed the machines because of the continuing rise in foreign visitor arrivals. Previously, SIM cards were only available at stores in the Airport.

NTT Communications already has SIM card vending machines at the Aqua City Odaiba shopping complex in Tokyo and Kansai International Airport in Osaka Prefecture.

Usually, users must undergo an authentication process by connecting online and providing their personal information, including name and e-mail address.

The vending machines’ passport scanners complete the procedure by reading the information on a user’s passport. It only takes about seven minutes to activate a SIM card after purchase. The SIM cards are priced at 3,726 yen ($30) for one-week use and 5,346 yen for two weeks. The prices include tax.

Both types have the maximum data amount of 100 megabytes a day. If the amount exceeds the limit, the network speed automatically slows down.

NTT Communications expects strong demand by foreign tourists for the SIM cards. Foreign passengers at Narita Airport surpassed the 10 million mark in fiscal 2014.
