Let’s be honest: As of right now, the much-heralded drone revolution is not that impressive. Many drones are little more than updated remote-controlled helicopters, and I remember those from back in the 1980s. But drones are evolving. The cameras on them are getting higher-res; their ability to counter high winds and other obstacles is improving; and in some cases, they are even able to fly to a destination autonomously.

Add it together and the implications are significant. If drones get easier to use, more capable and less reliant on constant supervision, then maybe Jeff Bezos’s vision of drone delivery isn’t that far-fetched after all. It may in fact be part of a larger new reality where drones facilitate commerce right alongside cars, trucks and bicycles. Don’t believe it? Check out this video with three of the most intriguing drones at this year’s Consumer Electronic Show:

Almost all of consumer tech evolves along the four principles of smaller, faster, lighter, and cheaper, all of which have a special significance for drones. These three models shown at CES begin to sketch out a possible future for flying robots—one that’s way bigger than remote-controlled helicopters.
