Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are typically a California-only affair, but Toyota is looking to buck that trend.
The new 2016 Mirai, Toyota’ first fuel-cell powered vehicle to hit the market, will also be available on the east coast thanks to a partnership between Toyota and Air Liquide.
Twelve new hydrogen fuel stations are planned in the areas of New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island although exact timing hasn’t been announced yet. The Mirai will launch first in California, with the East coast expansion to follow.
“Toyota’s vision of a hydrogen society is not just about building a great car, but ensuring accessible, reliable and convenient refueling for our customers,” said Toyota USA CEO Jim Lentz. “I am happy to announce that this vision will expand beyond the borders of California and give customers the opportunity to join the fuel cell movement.”
As of today, there are about 15 hydrogen refueling stations in the state of California, with more on the way.

The Toyota Mirai, which means ‘future’ in Japanese, is the official name of the hydrogen powered car in the US, offering a 300 mile range and the ability to be refilled in less than five minutes.
“For us, this isn’t just another car. This is an opportunity to really make a difference,” said Toyota Global CEO Akio Toyoda. “And making a difference is what Toyota is all about. The future has arrived. And it’s called Mirai.”
