5 tech toys that get an A for education

When it comes to your child’s learning, technology doesn’t have all the answers. A simple puzzle can teach logic, a stuffed bear is enough to broaden the imagination, and there’s still no better literacy substitute than a full and diverse bookcase.

Having said that, shop shelves (and app stores) are filled with more tech toys than ever before. Even if they don’t work for every kid, connected games and gadgets can change the way our children play and enrich their learning. So, although it’s not …

According to the World Health Organization, there are 285 million people with severe visual impairment across the entire world. Though ‘active braille’ technology exists (displaying changing br…

Keine Ahnung.

Surfing on a dirt bike, because everything else is too easy

From Flyboards to Hoverboards, there are some crazy water rideables out there at the moment, but they pale in comparison to this wave-riding dirt bike built for DC Shoes and piloted by Australian stunt rider Robbie Maddison. Maddison, whose previous work includes filling in for James Bond during a chase sequence in Skyfall, took the modified bike out onto the waves of Tahiti to film the four-minute sequence below. The end result is frankly stunning, with the bike appearing to tear across the w…

Stanford research points to Lytro-like VR that kills motion sickness

Not too long ago, virtual reality was more science fiction than science fact. Over the past couple of years, giant leaps have been made toward developing this robust platform. However, one challenge still stands in the way for greater consumer adoption: motion sickness. But this may change quickly, as a team at Stanford University has developed a more realistic way of presenting virtual reality.

Rolls-Royce is developing drone cargo ships

Drones are already patrolling the skies, and eventually Rolls-Royce wants to see them take over the seas too. According to Bloomberg, Rolls-Royce Holdings is developing unmanned cargo ships that can be remotely controlled by captains using a virtual-reality recreation of a vessel's bridge. Development on the ships began last year, and it expects the unmanned ships to eventually offer a safer, cleaner, and less-expensive option for moving cargo.

Mega-Highway Project Connecting London To New York Proposed By Russia

There have been talks these past couple of days about a report in which Russian Railways president Vladimir Yakunin is proposing a trans-Siberian highway linking, well, the entire northern hemisphere together.

Not that this doesn't sound cool and all, but it also sounds like an almost impossible task from a financial perspective. Still, building this 'Trans-Eurasian Belt' alongside the existing Trans-Siberian railway could be interesting to say the least.

The plan was unveiled at the Russia…

New Stratolaunch aircraft is the largest ever built

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen wants to revolutionize space travel, and he’s betting that the upcoming Stratolaunch can dramatically cut costs and improve the number of launches we can perform on an ongoing basis. The Stratolaunch is a giant aircraft with a 117m / 386 foot wingspan — larger than the Spruce Goose or the Saturn V, and nearly half the length of the massive Hindenburg-class airships built before WW2. The Stratolaunch is built around a pair of retired 747s, and will utilize their e…

New EyeControl device delivers eye tracking anyone can use

If you really want to add eye tracking to your application, there are many new technologies floating around that can potentially do the job. The Eye Tribe hardware, for example, lets you become a hands-free master of Fruit Ninja, while software solutions like Senseye are ideal for phones or tablets. Unfortunately, if the only thing you can move is your eyes, none of these options would work very well.

For people who have diseases like ALS, or are otherwise “locked-in,” eye control is their onl…

Brain-controlled prosthesis nearly as good as one-finger typing

We’ve all seen the videos of paralyzed or locked in patients moving a robot arm to direct something tasty toward their mouth. While impressive, many folks still wonder just how good these brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) are, and more importantly for the patients themselves, how good will they become?

Airbus just patented a jet that could fly from London to New York in 1 hour

Last month, the US Patent and Trademark Office approved an application from Airbus' Marco Prampolini and Yohann Coraboeuf for an "ultra-rapid air vehicle and related method of aerial locomotion." In other words, Airbus just patented a hypersonic jet.
